Pushkar is a small town in Rajasthan, which is located 14 km away from Ajmer. It is one of the holiest cities of India and the abode of the lone Lord Brahma temple in the world. Pushkar in Sanskrit means blue lotus flower. It is believed that the gods released a swan with a lotus in its beak and let it fall on earth where Brahma would perform a grand Yagna. The place where the lotus fell was called Pushkar. Pushkar word may be derived from word 'Pushkarni' which means- lake. It may be derived from word Pushpa means flower and Kar means hand. Pushkar Fair
Pushkar Fair is one of the biggest camel and livestock fairs in the whole world. Over the years, this ten day fair has become a significant tourist attraction and includes various competitions such as the "bridal competition", "longest moustache", “matkaphod", camel safari and much more. In recent times, an exhibition cricket match between the local Pushkar club and a team of random foreign travelers has also been included. During this fair, people sell & buy livestock that includes horse, buffaloes, cows and camels. The women buy fabrics, textiles, clothes and bracelets from the various stalls. The camel race event starts off the fair with songs and music. Many exhibitions are also done during this fair to demonstrate the rich historical and cultural heritage of Rajasthan, India.
